Retired? Should You Buy In An Active Adult Community?
April 24th, 2008 categories: Real Estate News
Many baby boomers are retiring now or are planning for their retirement in the next few years. A question for many in that group is, “Where do I want to live”? With the children grown and gone and the opportunity for travel during the retirement years, many are looking to “downsize” their homes.
The next questions are to what and where? After working with and knowing many people who are faced with this decision, I am a strong proponent for Active Adult Communities.
An Active Adult Community can be defined as a community that has age restrictions for its residents. These restrictions can vary from community to community. The concept is that residents can live among neighbors who are similar in age with similar interests and desires.
Within these communities, amenities and social events would be among the largest attractions. Amenities such as fitness centers, pools and classes are exclusive to the residents who are similar in age. Residents can enjoy the pool without children running and screaming. The fitness centers are full of others who are of similar fitness levels, which many find less intimidating.
The Social Calendar is also full in these communities and meeting new people is easy. Many times residents have relocated from other parts of the country and without these social calendars, it would be difficult to meet new people.
The Phoenix, Arizona area is a very popular destination for retiree and second homes. For that reason, we have several quality Active Adult Communities in the Phoenix/Tucson area. Here are my top reasons I recommend Active Adult Communities:
- The ability to live amongst residents of similar age and interest levels
- The ease of meeting new friends
- The amenities such as fitness centers, pools, tennis, pickleball, lawn bowling, etc.
- The classes and learning opportunities that are offered for residents to learn new skills, like computers or woodoworking
- Low Homeowner Association Fees relative to the amenities offered
- Safety – Many of these communities are gated or even guard gated
- Less Home Maintenance – Many of these homes are new or newer meaning less maintenance
- Many of these communities are located in larger communities with all ages, great for the grandkids
